Description | The objective of the course is to impart theoretical aspects of molecular recognition as well as experimental approaches to characterize and quantify protein-ligand interactions. A fundamental principle of all biological processes is molecular organization and recognition. Biological macromolecules are able to interact with various small and large molecules, with a high degree of specificity and with high affinity, fascinating chemists and biologists from the very beginning of modern biochemistry. A prerequisite for a deeper understanding of the molecular basis of protein-ligand interactions is a thorough characterization and quantification of the energetics governing complex formation. The course aims at presenting the basic aspects of molecular recognition, the specificity and stability of ligand binding as well as experimental approaches to characterize and quantify protein-ligand interactions. |
